Saturday 25th April – Accies finish with a flourish!

Accies 62  Allan Glens19 at New Anniesland.

Accies finished the season with another outstanding performance spreading the ball wide at every opportunity, and running in some fine scores.

There is a real heart in the club, and recently retired player, Andy ‘Beaver’ Jackson has created a good spirit as coach, which has meant the team are enjoying their rugby.

This has meant that on the occasions when players have been introduced from the 2nd XV,  they have found it easy to slot into a successful side.

The surface of the 1st XV pitch was in fine order, and in spite of the rain that had been forecast, the game was played in fine sunny and dry conditions.

A strong Accies side were in control throughout, and with an exceptionally strong back row, of Mike Walker, Sam Miller, and Kieran McDonald, the result was never in doubt.

It is no surprise that young Kieran is set for greater things. Glasgow have involved him in their ‘Academy’ set-up, and he is keen to progress as far as possible, and we, of course, wish him all success. He is a very nice young man.

He was immense in the line-out on Saturday, and was extremely effective in the loose, but make no mistake, this team is loaded with many talented players who are committing well, and playing for each other, so it was pleasing to finish the season with such a fine performance, finishing in third place, only two points behind Carrick who had started the season as possible favourites.

Accies season started with a real ‘buzz’, and with the serious hope of being in the hunt for promotion.  However, a couple of unfortunate defeats set us back somewhat; with near neighbours and rivals GHK having a fine win against us at Old Anniesland.

GHK went on to complete the season undefeated, winning all their matches.

In Accies return match with GHK at New Anniesland some two weeks ago, Accies had turned up determined to turn around the early season defeat, and whilst they gave one of the finest performances seen at New Anniesland for many years, they lost out in a tight game, by 37 – 34.

GHK have to be congratulated on winning the League, and gaining promotion to National league, Division 3.  Cammie Little who, many years ago had been an outstanding player for High School FP’s and Hawks, has brought much experience as coach to ‘team GHK’, and we wish them well for next season.

In Conclusion:

The Annual Rugby Dinner took place after the match, in the clubhouse, and about 50 members attended.

Sam Miller, the outstanding back row player, who joined the club this season, was to the fore in the awards.

The award of Players Player of the Year is recognised as a prestigious award, since it is voted on by all the players and Sam was the stand out recipient, he also was awarded the 1st XV Player of the year award. Other award winners were Justin Araki (2nd XV most improved player) and Andy MacLaughlin ( 2nd XV player of the year). The 1stXV‘s most improved player award went to Fraser Wilson. To the total delight and enthusiastic support of all present, Andy “Beaver” Jackson was awarded the Clubman award, which was well deserved, for turning the section round over the past 4 months.

There was a great camaraderie amongst all those present, which bodes well for next season. There is a real awareness of the 150 year celebrations being planned for next season and how important it is going to be for the club.

These plans will, hopefully be announced in the next few months, and we look forward to players, young and old getting together to help in the preparations. We will be using all available media sources to keep you up to date.

Thank you for your support of the team throughout this season.

I am sure that everyone who has any connection to the Club will rally to ensure the successful celebration of the remarkable history of our Glasgow Academicals’ Rugby Club.

Let’s all be part of the 150th Club!
